The Georgian Messenger was first published on February 25th, 1919, during the time of the first Georgian independent democratic republic (1918-1921). In February 25, 1921 Russian Bolsheviks occupied Georgia. The Editor-in Chief of the newspaper at that time was Elisabeth Orbeliani. The original Georgian Messenger was a weekly newspaper and only 13 issues were ever published. The publication of the newspaper was renewed in October 1990 after the restoration of the independence of Georgia from the Soviet Union. The Georgian Messenger was then published irregularly until August 1993. The Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper during this period was Irakli Kenchoshvili. The Director General of The Messenger is Professor Zaza Gachechiladze, Ph.D. who is a specialist on English literature and author of books on Dylan Thomas and Geoffrey Chaucer. Before The Messenger, he was the founder and first Editor-in-Chief of the English language Georgian Times from 1994 until November 2001. Among the readers of The Messenger are all the accredited embassies in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, representations to the country, missions, humanitarian organisations, airline passengers, hotel guests, joint ventures and private businessmen. It is distributed to subscribers in more than twenty countries throughout the world including the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Holland, France, Iran, Turkey, and others. Subscribers include international organisations such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the British Foreign Office, the US State Department, the UN and the OSCE. Among the newspaper's contributors are leading experts in political and social science, economy and culture. Reporters from The Messenger is there to cover news breaking stories across the country, to analyse what these events mean for the country, and to generally keep foreigners updated on the region's affairs. It provides a vital source of information both for those planning to visit Georgia for the first time or for those that reside permanently in the country.
