2007, #139 (1406) The Conservative Party’s women’s caucus, at a July 18 press conference, requested that President Mikheil Saakashvili do more to help large families. The opposition politicians warned that Georgia’s economic situation is dire, and the current administration must assist large families—or the nation would soon be in serious danger. Currently, the state gives GEL 35 a month to families with seven or more children. Party representatives propose that families with at least three children receive 150 GEL per month, plus 100 GEL for each additional child. According to the newspaper 24 Saati, the proposed program would cost the state USD 37 million a year. Government statistics show 243 233 families are registered as having three or more children |
