sides are the main concerns of the UN Secretary General’s
report on the situation in Abkhazia, issued July 23.

Germany Invests Another EUR 27
Million in Georgia’s Future
The Georgian Finance Minister and the German ambassador signed
two contracts July 24, which will together be worth over EUR 27
million for Georgia. Following those, Finance Minister Aleksi
Aleksishvili put pen to paper on an agreement with Germany’s
Reconstruction Credit Bank (KfW) on restructuring Georgia’s

Army
“You are the army of a democratic country. That
means you are a thinking army,” President Mikheil Saakashvili
told newly-minted Georgia military officers on July 23, after

Turkish Election Results Good

Many are summing up the Justice and Development party’s
(AKP) win in Turkey’s Sunday parliamentary elections as
a vote for the economic and democratic reforms and a continued
pro-Western approach. It’s also widely seen as a vote of
confidence from the Turkish people that despite the fact the ruling
party is Islamic, they are not afraid of losing their democracy.

Banks Make the Cut
Out of the 18 commercial banks in Georgia, 17 managed
to meet the National Bank of Georgia’s (NBG) criterion of
GEL 12 million in base capital for legal operation. The sole exception

Consider Georgia Their Homeland
80 percent of polled people in Samtskhe–Javakheti
and Kvemo Kartli provinces consider Georgia to be their homeland,
says a recent USAID-sponsored survey. The significant ethnic minority
populations there are participating in elections and see a future
as part of Georgia, the newspaper Akhali Taoba writes.

Armenian Jewelry Production
Down 50 Percent
Jewelry and goldsmithing production in Armenia dropped
by half between the first half of 2006 and the same period in
2007, said an Armenian Ministry of Trade and Economic Development
official on July 23, now amounting to just USD 71.5 million.
