2007, #155 (1422) Tourists flocking to Akhali Atoni monastery and Ritsa Lake in Abkhazia Russian tourist agencies are vigorously promoting tourist sites in the separatist region of Abkhazia, writes the news agency Regnum. Tourists are attracted by low prices, and the de facto administration there is keen to have the revenue flow. The de facto administration's state tourism committee claimed that 250 000 tourists have visited Abkhazia since the start of this year's tourist season. The most popular attractions were apparently the Akhali Atoni monastery complex where 150 000 reportedly visited, and the Ritsa Lake area with 100 000 visitors. Both these sites
are near the Russian border and were well-known destinations in the
Soviet era. It is thought that efforts will be made to promote tourism
to other areas of the region, which is enjoying an overall strengthening
of the industry. |
