No drop in sight for either inflation or the lari

The Georgian lari is continuing its rise against the dollar, and most experts see no imminent turnaround. Domestic inflation is also rising, writes the newspaper Rezonansi.

Economists foresee tough times ahead for small businesses as the strengthening lari puts a cramp on exports. Some say the timing is right for government emergency measures to put a lid on both inflation and the upward-trending lari.

But if official data were the measure, there would be little problem at all. Some observers are criticizing the government for, they claim, deliberately understating the inflation problem in government figures. Reliable inflation measures, however, are generally difficult to peg.

Many of those same analysts also argue that the administration's pro-big business approach to development will ultimately hamstring the countries economy, instead calling for more support for small and medium enterprises.
