Turkey is now Georgia's biggest trade partner. Russia held that distinction up to 2005, when Turkey came second and Britain, Azerbaijan, and Germany trailed after, according to government data. Then Moscow slapped wide-ranging trade sanctions on Georgia, and exports to the northern neighbor plummeted from USD 152 million to USD 75 million. That's reordered Georgia's list of biggest exports, which in 2006 was led by ferroalloys, copper ore and scrap metal, followed by hazelnuts, gold and fertilizers. In 2006, Georgia
imported oil and petroleum products more than anything, along with plenty
of cars, natural gas and medicines. |
