Mystery investors
get Georgian Railway for 99 years
Question marks hang in the air a week after officials announced
that Georgian Railway's management rights would be leased for
99 years to Parkfield Investments Limited, a newly-registered
company with anonymous backers. (more) Union of
Writers loses office but not resolve
At three in the morning of August 21, the government evicted the
Union of Writers from their office on 13 Machabeli Street after
a five-day standoff. Policeman entered the building where seven
Union members were holed up, and told them to vacate the premises.

protection agreement signed with Batumi oil terminal
On August 20, Environment Minister Davit Tkeshelashvili and the
Greenoak Group inked an agreement on tackling environmental problems
in Batumi. Greenoak Group owns the Batumi oil terminal and sea
port; the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources
will work with them to patch up current ecological problems and
