Friday, October 19, 2007, #200 (1467) Boney M. bring ‘disco diplomacy’ to the conflict zone On October 13, iconic 70s pop group Boney M. played the state-controlled village of Tamarasheni, deep in the South Ossetia conflict zone. Singer Marcia Barrett magnificently delivered their message of peace and funky love at the crowded concert, held within shouting distance of the de facto secessionist capital of Tskhinvali. Organized by the Ministry of Culture with help from events company Eastern Promotions, the show featured activists from anti-secessionist campaign Kokoity Fandarast along with Georgian singers crooning about territorial sovereignty. Even President Mikheil Saakashvili came to catch the band, immortalized as one of the first Western acts invited to play in the former Soviet Union. The Messenger asked Barrett about the performance, her first in a conflict zone. “Once you come with a clean heart, everything’s fine,” she said. |
