Foreign ministers from the EU and Black Sea region held talks in Kiev on February 14.

“This meeting is a good opportunity to create a favorable environment for the Black Sea region’s countries with frozen conflicts and pave way for solving these,” European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner said, according to the Azerbaijani news agency Trend.

Ferrero-Waldner also announced that the EU is prepared to allot EUR 1 billion for development in the Black Sea region. “After Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU, we grew closer to the Black Sea region, and therefore, participation in this meeting and development of this region is very important for us,” she said.

Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet underlined the importance of regional cooperation at the meeting. “Cooperation in the Baltics was very important for Estonia on the way to the EU,” the news agency Regnum quoted him as saying.
