We did not expect such strong support

Akhali Taoba reports that Nino Kalandadze, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, says that speech of Vice President of the United States Joseph Biden was a positive surprise for the MPs sitting on the Government side.

“Such unconstrained, unequivocal and clear support of Georgia was unexpected. I must admit that positive surprise at this strong support really could be noticed in the Government seats and really important messages have been sent. Biden’s speech mentioned important issues such as territorial integrity, the necessity of democratic development, the US administration’s support for our integration into NATO, the strategic partnership between the two countries and many other issues,” added Kalandadze.

Davitaia expects another provocation from Russia

Akhali Taoba writes that Paata Davitaia, the Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, does not exclude the possibility that Dmitry Medvedev or Vladimir Putin will visit to Abkhazia and create another provocation.

“The visit of Vice President Biden and the statements he made in Tbilisi are further confirmation that the “reset” of American-Russian relations will only take place while considering the interests of Georgia and Ukraine,” stated Davitaia, who added that clear evidence of this is provided by Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Karasin, who has said that the “reset” in relations between Russia and America has not been achieved.

Bokeria to become Foreign Minister

Alia reports that an important reshuffle of the Government of Georgia is planned. Grigol Vashadze, the Minister of the Foreign Affairs, will be replaced by Giga Bokeria, one of his deputies. This issue has become urgent since the visit of the Vice President of the United States. Vashadze did not attend the functions connected with the visit, which was a major event unparalleled since the visit of George W. Bush. Vashadze is a Russian citizen.

Bokeria has had a strained relationship with Vashadze since the August war. Bokeria expected that the policy of the Ministry would be more forthright but the Minister chose to go another way. Grigol Vashadze is also not much liked by the US new administration.

When Joe Biden came Giga Bokeria met him at the airport rather than Vashadze. It is also well known that Bokeria visits the United States often. Bokeria has been representing Georgia all over the place whereas Vashadze has not. Biden’s visit to Georgia was not unexpected so Vashadze could have come to work for this special occasion even if he was on holiday.
