From March 2014, Azerbaijan will stop pumping its oil through the Baku-Novorosisk pipeline, and from that time it will activate the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline. Since the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline started functioning, other routes of transporting Azeri oil to the West have been slowly fading. Eventually Azerbaijan found it more profitable to give up exporting oil through the so-called northern route (Baku-Novorosisk) and totally switch to the route of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan.

State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) plans to pump 1.55 million tons of oil transit through this route.
