Women’s Information Center starts a new project in Shida Kartli region

Women’s Information Center carries out a new project Informed Society and Gender Based Democracy in Election Process with the support of Central Election Commission's LEPL Center of Electoral Systems Development, Reforms and Trainings.

The six-month project aims at raising awareness of rural women and girls in their political and civil rights and their engagement in election process in Shida Kartli region for the upcoming 2016 parliamentary elections.

While meeting with the rural women in the four target municipalities of Shida Kartli region (Khidistavi village of Gori Muniicpality, Metekhi village of Kaspi Municipality, Ruisi village of Kareli Municipality and Osiauri village of Khashuri Municipality), the main problems each community is facing nowadays have been identified. Gender Advisors from Shida Kartli region also shared their experience with the local community.

Gasification, water provision and pollution are amongst the main problems the local women are facing in the region every day. After discussing the most problematic issues for the villages, the women received information on how to advocate their needs with the local government from the team of WIC’s Informed Society and Gender Based Democracy in Election Process project.

On the next stage of the selected leader women will take part in the training on women’s issues and gender equality aimed at raising their awareness on how to better advocate the problems of their communities. Later they will have opportunity to meet with the representatives of central and local governments as well as political parties to better familiarize with their election programs and discuss their problems and needs with the decision-makers.
