Defense Ministry Makes Pre-election Appeal

The Ministry of Defense of Georgia has responded to the statement made by former military servicemen at the Mukhatgverdi brothers' cemetery last week, where one of the individuals in a military uniform stated that “the president must not become the person, who accuses Georgia of launching the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.”

According to the Ministry of Defense, Devi Tchankotadze and the people accompanying him are former servicemen and have left the armed forces years ago. Consequently, the political statement made by them was aimed at misleading the public, the ministry reports.

“They addressed the people wearing military uniforms, which aimed at misleading the public. It is totally unacceptable for the Defense Ministry and state interests to use a military uniform for political goals and to try to politicize the army. This action is harmful to the important institution, such as the Georgian armed forces and is insulting for each military person," reads the statement of the Defense Ministry.

The ministry called on each citizen and political parties not to try to involve the armed forces in political or election campaigns in any form.
