Dimitri Shashkin – Abolition of exams will lead to corruption in high schools

Former Minister of Education and representative of the "United National Movement", Dimitry Shashkin responded to the abolition of the General Graduation Exams (for schools).

He noted that by abolishing the exams, corruption will be back to high schools.

“There is not a single normal country in the world, where students don’t take exams. In Georgia, private schools conduct exams twice a year as knowledge requires testing and measurement. School education is no less important than higher education. Children acquire the skills that help them for the rest of their lives to be successful.

There is a consensus in the whole world that there are eight things necessary to study, not because someone wants it done so, but because it is proven that the study of these eight subjects is required for the child’s development. These eight are as follows: native language, foreign language, history, geography, chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics. By abolishing General Graduation Exams in high schools, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology will be destructed in high schools. We have already seen this in the 90s,” he said.

He also noted that since 2012, the exam results were degraded and canceling them is not a solution.

The Ministry of Education introduced the new system of exams in secondary schools in 2010. All 11th and 12th graders had to pass a total of eight qualifying examinations.

School Graduate Exams (Exit Examination) will be abolished.

The Ministry of Education explained on February 3 that for students to graduate they must complete all subjects with at least a grade of 5 out of 10.
