Night at the Museum

By Mariam Chanishvili
Thursday, May 16
Every year, on or around May 18th, International Museum Day, a celebration coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), takes place around the world.

Georgian National Museum (GNM) traditionally joins the Night at The Museum campaign with the Museum Festival.

Within the festival, various exhibitions, educational programs, book launches and public lectures will be held at the National Museum.

Tbilisi History Museum will present the Swiss photographer Daniel Spehr’s photo exhibition titled "1993".

Spehr visited Georgia in 1993. He was granted with the Atelia Mondial IAAB scholarship, which gave young artists a chance to conduct different projects all over the world.

The exhibition will present photos taken during the artist's life in Georgia, reflecting the socio-political and cultural reality of the 1990s Georgia.

The opening ceremony will take place on May 16.

The exhibition is being implemented within the project "Modern Art Gallery".

Apart from this particular exhibition, on May 18, from 9 pm till 1 am, all the GNM museums will host different educational programs, lectures, cognitive games and musical performances, as well as other activities for visitors of all ages.

“The role of museums in society is changing. Museums keep reinventing themselves in their quest for becoming more interactive, audience focused, community-oriented, flexible, adaptable and mobile. They have become cultural hubs functioning as platforms where creativity combines with knowledge and where visitors can also co-create, share and interact,” reads the statement by the ICOM.

The visitors can check out and attend guided tours at S. Janashia Museum of Georgia, D. Shevardnadze National Gallery, I. Grishashvili Tbilisi History Museum (Karvasla), Elene Akhvlediani House-Museum, Sighnaghi Museum, Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography and Ivane Javakhishvili Samtskhe-Javakheti History Museum.
