First-ever South Korea-Georgia International Exhibition opens in Tbilisi

On August 17, 2019, a joint exhibition of South Korean and Georgian artists, titled “Korea Georgia International Exchange Exhibition” was opened in Tbilisi, with the initiative of the Rector of Apollon Kutateladze State Academy of Fine Arts, Professor George Gugushvili and President of the Korea International Association of Formative Arts (CIAF), Lee Kyu Hyung, Director of N(N)LE „My Lawyer” under the City Hall, Marina Beradze and Curator, Dongjae Christine You.

The exhibition has an exchange aspect to it, so after Tbilisi, in 2020, it will be hosted by South Korea. The project is organized by the Curator, Dongjae Christine You and supported by Mr. Kim Se Woong – Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Georgia and by Mr. Kim Sunyoung CEO of JSC Nenskra Hydro. The Curator from the Georgian side was Nino Gujabidze. The exhibition was hosted by the Georgian State Museum of Theatre, Music, Cinema, and Choreography, the ‘Art Palace’.

The South Korean delegation was represented by 19 renowned artists from CIAF. President, Lee Kyu Hyung, Byun Gok Ji, Choi Jeoung Im, Chung Jun, Kim Gyung Soon, Kim Hye Kyung, Kim Jung Hae, Kim Min Joo, Lee Bok Hee, Lee Jeong Gun, Lee Soo Jin, Lee Soon Hee, Lim Hun Ja, Park Mi Ran, Shin Hea Young, Shin Kye Young, Joo Mikyoung, Chung Kyungyeon and Lim Hyunjung. The Georgian side was represented by well-known Georgian artists: George Gugushvili, Keti Matabeli, Tamaz Varvaridze, Vakhtang Megrelishvili, Mamuka Mikeladze, Anri Basilaia, Konstantine Tsikhelashvili, Tinatin Kldiashvili, David Aleksidze, Otar Chakvetadze, Gogi Lazarashvili.

It is noteworthy that the delegation for the cultural sphere has visited Georgia for the first time, thanks to an independent curator, Dongjae Christine You, who works in Georgia. Mr. Lee Kyu Hyung, the President of the Korea International Association of Formative Arts (CIAF) took the first steps in establishing and enhancing the creative and cultural relations between the two countries.

The exhibition ‘Intercultural Dialogue’ will be open until August 24 at the ‘Art Palace’.

The Charge D’Affaires of South Korea, H.E Mr. Kim Se Woong, also attended the event. During his speech, Woong talked about the importance of the meeting, as something that represents a base of the cultural relations between the two countries.

“Politics, economics, culture – there are the fields where we have friendly cooperation, something that should be noted is a building of Nenskra Hydropower Plant, which is a new and important project,” noted Charge D’Affaires of South Korea.

The establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and Georgia began on 14 December 1992. Since then, many successful projects have been implemented in Georgia with the hard work of the states. Georgia has its embassy in Seoul, and South Korean embassy is operating in Tbilisi.
