Public Movement Lelo urges government to start negotiations on status of special ally with US

Public Movement "Lelo" responds to the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin to modernize the de facto Abkhazian army.

Movement Lelo claims that the Russian authorities continue the occupation and actual annexation of Georgian territory.

According to Lelo, the Kremlin's recent decision to strengthen the military potential of the breakaway region of Abkhazia is yet another proof that Russia's goal is full military exploitation of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region, including by maintaining an explosive tendency on the ground and strengthening militaristic sentiments.

"This act is an act of aggression against Georgia and another gross violation of international law. All the above was not responded to properly by the Government of Georgia. Moreover, the government continues to pursue ineffective, accommodating and effective policies, using no leverage of diplomacy. At the same time, the Georgian government has made politically inappropriate statements about this fact, indicating that it is unwilling and unable to respond adequately to Russia's aggressive acts against Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity,” reads the statement by Lelo.

Lelo calls on the government of Georgia to condemn, at the level of the head of government, the Kremlin's recent decision to fund Abkhaz military armaments, start negotiations with the US President's Administration on granting special ally status to Georgia, and abstain from any, non-negotiating dialogue and bilateral meeting format with the Russian delegation within and after the UN Assembly.

Mamuka Khazaradze, Georgian businessman and the founder of TBC Bank, launched a public movement called Lelo on September 12.
