Signing the Grant Contracts of the Four Projects within the GGP and One Project under the GCGP of the Embassy of Japan in Georgia

In March 2020, the grant contract of four projects within the Grassroots Human Security Grant Program (GGP) and one project under the Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Projects (GCGP) were signed, which were funded by the Government of Japan, based on the goodwill of the Japanese people.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the Signing Ceremonies were not held. The Grant Contracts was signed involving the Grant Signatories: Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Tadaharu Uehara, Mayor of Shuakhevi Municipality – Mr. Pridon Putkaradze, Head of the Legal Entity Under Public Law Emergency Situations Coordination and Urgent Assistance Center – Mr. Avtandil Talakvadze, Chair of Board of the International Journalists House (IJH) – Mr. Aslan Chanidze, Operations Manager of the World Vision Georgia – Ms. Ekaterine Gurgenadze and Rector of the Ilia State University - Mr. Giga Zedania.

The five projects are:

Four projects under the GGP Grassroots Human Security Grant Program:
1. The Project for Provision of Mobile Intensive Care Unit in Telavi, Ambrolauri, Zugdidi and Ozurgeti Municipalities, Grant Implementer: Legal Entity Under Public Law Emergency Situations Coordination and Urgent Assistance Center, Grant Amount: 290,500 USD, Date of Signing: March 19/2020. The project will help to save dozens of citizens every year, by offering emergency medical transportation;
2. The Project for Provision of Garbage Truck in Shuakhevi Municipality, Grant Implementer: Shuakhevi Municipality, Grant Amount: 68,500 USD, Date of Signing: March 19/2020. The project will support waste management improvement in Shuakhevi and environment protection;
3. The Project for Construction of Kindergarten at Zanavi Village in Adigeni Municipality, Grant Implementer: World Vision Georgia, Grant Amount: 72,607 USD, Date of Signing: March 16/2020. The project will enhance promotion of human security among children, whose parents have to work in the field.
4. The Project for Provision of Mobile Library in Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Grant Implementer: Independent Journalists House (IJH), Grant Amount: 72,000 USD, Date of Signing: March 17/2020. The project will provide education opportunities for the children and youth in Mountainous Adjara Region, where access to literature is scarce;

One Project Under the GCGP Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Projects:
1. The Project for Improvement of the Japan Center in the Ilia State University, Grant Implementer: the Ilia State University, Grant Amount: 10,921 USD, Date of Signing: March 6/2020. The project will help improving the environment for Japanese learners in the Japan Center of the University and increasing the knowledge of Japanese in Georgia.

Since the independence of Georgia, Japan has provided over 180 grants within the GGP Grassroots Human Security Program, totaling over 18 million USD, in addition to other grant schemes. The GGP program aims to support human security in Georgia in the following priority fields: environment protection, agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare and education. The major principles behind the GGP program are overcoming poverty, sustainable development, inclusiveness and participatory growth.
