Coronavirus cases to be increased up to 400 by the end of the week, Gamkrelidze predicts

Director General of the National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health Amiran Gamkrelidze discussed the expected scale of the Covid-19 spread.

“We predict to have 350 to 400 cases of the virus by the end of this week,” he said. According to him, the whole month of April and 1-2 weeks of May will be difficult.

"We predict between 350 and 400 cases of infection by the end of this week. April and May 1-2 weeks will be quite difficult. Therefore, all the recommendations that we say must be taken into account, especially social distancing. It is one of the most powerful weapons in the fight against this infection. However, there are other models that predict that the peak may be later, say in July or September,” said Gamkrelidze.

He explained that the decrease of new cases of Coronavirus in some countries is connected to social distancing and noted that Georgia has started social distancing early on and thus prevented the mass breakout .

“There are some scenarios according to which peak will be reached later in July or September etc. We have meetings regarding this matter from time to time and whoever is interested they are free to attend,” said Gamkrelidze.

The director General also stated that the stock of PCR tests for coronavirus will be filled and up to 20,000 tests will be added this week. In addition, he said, they have signed a contract for 60,000 tests and will receive them by the end of May.

As for rapid testing, he noted that the state is working on it.
