Public Defender Calls for Action on Femicide and Labor Rights

Marking International Women's Day, Georgia's Public Defender Levan Ioseliani has called on the state to move beyond existing legal frameworks and take 'systemic and effective steps' to protect women from violence and economic marginalization.

While acknowledging that the country has strengthened its response to domestic violence over the last decade, the Ombudsman noted that "consistent and effective state policy implementation remains necessary" to address gaps in the safety network. Data from the General Prosecutor's Office reveals that in 2025, "12 cases of femicide and 21 attempted murders of women were identified."

The Public Defender expressed particular concern over instances where "despite the state's prior information about possible violence, the prevention of a woman's murder or attempted murder was not possible."

Beyond physical safety, the statement addressed the economic barriers facing women in Georgia. According to the Ombudsman, the full realization of women's labor rights, their equal involvement in economic life, and equal pay for work remain significant challenges."

To address these disparities, the Public Defender "calls on the state to take systemic and effective steps to protect women's rights, empower them, and ensure their equal participation in political and economic life."
