The Georgian Dream Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has labeled recent remarks by EU Ambassador Pawel Herczynski as "extremely serious," accusing the diplomat of threatening the Georgian people with "civil war and a return to poverty." Kobakhidze's comments follow the formal summoning of the Ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Kobakhidze claimed that the Ambassador's rhetoric was part of a pattern, accusing Herczynski of previously attempting to influence the 2024 parliamentary elections. According to the Prime Minister, the Ambassador had "effectively" called on voters to return the "collective National Movement" to power.
Speaking on the necessity of the diplomatic response, Kobakhidze stated:
"The statement made by Herczynski is extremely serious in its content. When the EU ambassador directly threatens the Georgian people with civil war and a return to poverty, it is very grave. He also threatened the Georgian people before the parliamentary elections, when he called on voters to go to polling stations and effectively return the collective 'National Movement' to power - that is what Pawel Herczynski's call meant. The return of the collective 'National Movement' means a return to the dark past we have already experienced."
Kobakhidze further noted that the Georgian people had ignored these previous calls during the elections, acting instead "in accordance with their own interests."
Despite the harsh criticism, Kobakhidze indicated that the government does not currently intend to escalate the matter beyond the initial summons. He explained that while the administration is "used to such statements" from the Ambassador, a formal response was required.
"A diplomatic step was taken; the ambassador was summoned, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs listened to his explanations. I do not think further steps are necessary in this regard," Kobakhidze said.
