Economists predict the cost of bread to rise sharply in March, owing largely to a recent hike in world wheat prices, forcing consumers to fork out as much as GEL 1 for a 400 gram loaf.
The Ministry of Agriculture says it has only enough wheat reserves to last through February, according to the newspaper Versia, meaning bread prices could be hitting voters’ pockets in the run-up to the spring parliamentary elections.
Bread prices have soared in Georgia over the past two years, causing huge problems for poor all over the country. With recently reelected President Mikheil Saakashvili implementing his promised “Georgia without poverty” program, how the government deals with the expected price hike could be an important consideration for voters heading to the polls.
