A third of Azerbaijani families rely on remittances, Azerbaijani economist Rovshan Agaev says.
Agaev says that research shows money sent from relatives abroad accounts for approximately 50–60 percent of the average rural household income.
The Migration Center of Azerbaijan NGO puts the figure even higher, at 70 percent.
Around two million Azerbaijanis are thought to live and work in Russia, with Ukraine and Turkey being other significant destinations for Azerbaijani labor migrants.
