Lithuanian Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas said that the Nabucco pipeline project will be a key factor in bringing the EU closer to the Caspian region, when he visited Turkmenistan on April 23.

“To advance the Nabucco project, it is important that the sources of natural gas supply are ensured in Central Asia,” the news agency Regnum quoted Kirkilas as saying.

The Nabucco project, backed by both the EU and US, plans to take Central Asian and Middle Eastern gas to Europe via Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Austria. Construction is due to start in 2010 and the pipeline is scheduled to go online in 2013.
