Akhali Taoba reports some university students are boycotting lectures in protest at the increased cost of courses:

Students at Davit Aghmashenebeli University have stopped studying due to the increased cost of courses for second and third year students.

The students claim the university administration has violated contract in increasing the costs from GEL 1700 to GEL 3000.

The administration has told students to pay up by July 1 or face dismissal.

The students have addressed the Human Rights Ombudsman and are threatening to take the university administration to court.

“Gachechiladze against American influence”

United Opposition leader Levan Gachechiladze attacked US influence in the region at a May 26 opposition rally, Akhali Taoba reports:

“If we became the government we would change the geopolitical situation not only in Georgia but in the whole Caucasus and release it from Americans and their politics,” Gachechiladze said.

“We are struggling for the Georgian people to be able to rule their own country,” he said.

“Nukri Kantaria: Only way out is new election”

In an interview with Rezonansi Nukri Kantaria, a member of the self-described NGO for the Georgian intelligentsia, the Georgian Academy, called for new elections:

Kantaria claimed the government rigged the parliamentary elections in every region of Georgia by putting pressure on voters.

He said that the Georgian Academy thinks the current situation will lead to very high tension in the country and that the only way out is to hold fresh elections.

“The way out is to abolish these results and hold new parliamentary elections. I think the authorities themselves did not even want these elections to turn out as they did. I am sure they wanted to rig votes but not as many as to give this kind of majority in parliament,” he said.
