Unemployment increases
Wednesday, October 22
Unemployment is a painful topic in Georgia. The August war has made this issue even more acute.
The global economic crisis has affected even the more successful sectors of the Georgian economy, such as banking and construction. Crisis within the country and outside it has forced Georgian companies to either slow down or stop functioning at all. Analysts say that this is a temporary problem which will correct itself, but they cannot say when. So the process of laying off employees is underway.
According to published data there are more than 300,000 employees in Georgia, 40% female, 60% male. Large enterprises employ 60 % of these, medium-sized and small around 20 % each. The monthly salary that can be earned in large enterprises is approximately 600 GEL, in medium-sized approximately 350 GEL, in small enterprises 250 GEL.
