5548 Georgian citizens request asylum in foreign countries

The UN High Commission for Refugees has published a report about granting shelter to refugees and the source countries of those who ask for this. Georgia is in 16th place in the list, with 5,548 people of Georgian nationality having applied for political asylum in other countries. Armenia comes 22nd with 4,368 applications and Azerbaijan 39th with 1,834 applications.
The greatest number of people seeking asylum in the last year came from Iraq (40,483), then Somalia (21,823), Russia (20,477), Afghanistan (18,459), China (17,488), Serbia and Nigeria. The highest numbers of applications for shelter were received by the USA, Canada, European countries, Australia and New Zealand.
