Moldova has expressed its interest in becoming a partner to the NABUCCO project which has been officially signed off by five countries, Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Turkey. Kishinev has said several times that it would like an alternative to Russian gas and the NABUCCO pipeline will be passing through neighbouring Romania. Moldova wants to examine the possibility of directing the pipeline into Romania via Moldova.
Economic experts think that building 1 kilometre of such a pipeline would cost approximately USD 4-5 million. The NABUCCO pipeline will be 3,300 kilometres long in total and it will start functioning in 2013.
