Analyst from the Warsaw Centre of Western Studies Voycek Gorecky thinks that Russia is currently doing its utmost not to allow any kind of unrest to occur in Abkhazia prior to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Gorecky has said that Abkhazia will play a kind of supporting role in the Sochi Olympic Games by providing constructing materials, Abkhaz workers and Abkhazian tourist sights. Of course the idea of exploiting the Abkhazian sea coast for tourist reasons is much promoted in Russia as well.
Another incentive is the possibility of creating a naval base for the Russian fleet currently deployed in Sevastopol, Ukraine if it is forced to leave Sevastopol by 2017. Russia also seeks a serious military base in the South Caucasus.
