Last year Georgia exported products worth USD 1.135 billion. Therefore exports were worth four times less than imports. The export portfolio also contained the same products sold year on year so the economy has not diversified at all.
Many of the products Georgia exports are raw materials. For many years the major earners were scrap metal, ferroalloys and electricity. Despite the fact that more than half of the Georgian population is involved in agriculture production in this sector is very low.
In 2009 GEL 20 million was allotted for the development of agriculture. For 2010 this amount has doubled, but analysts suggest that this is not enough to substantially improve the situation in the agriculture sector.
