Georgian nationals will only lose their citizenship if they accept the citizenship of another country, it has been announced. The Law on Georgian Citizenship will be amended accordingly.
Georgian MP and co-author of the bill Lasha Todria states that there have been instances in which people who have renounced Georgian citizenship have been unable to obtain the citizenship of another country immediately, this rendering them stateless for a time. In order to prevent such occurrences and protect their human rights an order revoking a person's Georgian citizenship will now come into force only after they have provided all the documents confirming their acceptance of another citizenship.
The authors of the bill are MPs Lasha Todria, Zviad Kukava and Kakha Anjaparidze.
