The number of vehicles in Georgia is increasing very dramatically. In 2005 there were 414,425 cars registered in the country, in 2006 467,056, in 2007 519,676, in 2008 608,795, in 2009 654,246. Therefore in five years the number of cars in Georgia has doubled.
Consequently fuel consumption has also increased and therefore fuel imports. In 2005 Georgia imported 589,902 tonnes of petrol and diesel, in 2006 647,563 tonnes, in 2007 694,437 tonnes, in 2008 752,855, in 2009 828,453. Therefore between 2005 and 2009 fuel imports have increased 40 percent.
Chairman of the Oil Products Importers Union Vano Mtvralashvili explains that the improvement of economic conditions in the country has created such a large increase.
