According to the Department of Statistics over the last two years the number of divorces in Georgia has increased almost 50%. In 2007 2,325 couples were officially divorced but in 2009 the number was 4,030. Most of these couples had been married not more than four years, but in 200 cases the divorcing couple had had 20 years of married life.
Interestingly the initiators of divorces are mostly women. Analysts think that this is because women have become more independent and more socially and professionally integrated and can therefore take more independent decisions about who they wish to live with. The attitude towards divorced women has also changed and is no longer negative.
