From October 2010 the construction of a new 58 km motorway through Adjara connecting the Choloki administrative border post with the Sarpi state border post with Turkey will start. A tender has been announced and already eight companies have expressed an interest in participating in the bidding. Several families in villages along the motorway will be removed from their homes and paid compensation, however the amount of this will be known after the tender bidding is over.
The construction is being financed by the Asian Development Bank and is due to finish in 2014.
