The National Democratic Institute has published the results of an opinion poll which covered different issues, including the Georgian population's feelings towards NATO. Georgia’s NATO accession was supported by 25% of poll respondents. Georgia joining NATO under different conditions was supported by 59%, 7% were mostly against Georgia joining NATO and 9% categorically against it. During 2008 both official statistics and the results of the referendum on NATO accession showed that 77% of the population supported this.
Interestingly, 59% of those questioned now disapprove of Georgia’s official policy towards Russia. Many Georgians support the opening of the Larsi customs checkpoint and restoring bilateral relations and air flights between the two countries.
