IDPs` message delivered to UN New York Office
A Message to Civilized World - a three meter long paper roll signed by thousands of IDPs in Georgia, has been sent to the United Nations Organization`s head office in New York.
The message of the people who subscribed to the roll to the UN head office in New York is to request the withdrawal of the Russian army from Georgian territories, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The rally with the slogan 'a Message to the Civilized World' began two years after the beginning of the August War 2008 and it aims to call upon the UN, other international organizations and foreign countries to force Russia to release Georgian territories and stop the process of occupation. Mikheil Saakashvili – Russia has to get into Political Dialogue Without any Preconditions
‘We don’t’ want to resolve any conflict by force and Russia is well aware that Georgia has only peaceful intentions,’ President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili told 'Voice of America' during his visit to the U.S.
‘Russia has to get into a political dialogue with us without any preconditions. I think this is the logical thing to do, ‘Saakashvili said.
Mikheil Saakashvili was invited to the U.S. for the events dedicated to the memory of Richard Holbrooke. Saakashvili met with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden in the framework of the visit. (Interpressnews)
Georgian PM met UN Secretary General in Abu Dhabi
The Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri met with the UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon in Abu Dhabi within an official visit to the United Arab Emirates. Gilauri was attending one of the world's largest forums, discussing the energy crisis and associated challenges. The world leaders assembled in the UAE capital on Monday to call for global collective efforts to convert to clean energy.
During the 30 minute-long meeting, Gilauri reported on the situation in Georgia’s occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to the UN Secretary General. He reported the numerous violations of human rights in the regions, where no international monitoring mission was represented at present.
`The support of the organization in the process of regulating tensions in Georgia-Russia relations is vital. The support to Georgia’s territorial integrity, which the international authorities voice at every summit, is also very important for us. The resolution regarding IDPs in Georgia, which was adopted by the UN last autumn, has great importance for us,` Gilauri said. (Rustavi 2)
PACE President: Russia And Georgia Should Leave Disagreements In Past
Russia and Georgia should leave their existing disagreements in the past and should focus on the future.
According to Russian media, the chair of the PACE Mevlut Cavusoglu made this statement at a meeting of the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
As Chavashoglu noted, until an agreement on long-term solutions of current problems can be reached, conflicts will put obstacles in the way of stability and economic development of the whole region.
The meeting of the Monitoring Committee of PACE on the consequences of the Russian-Georgian war was held on January 17. Georgian delegation did not participate in it. (Prime-News)
Bank of Russia, “Abkhazian National Bank” Sign Cooperation Agreement
The Bank of Russia signed a cooperation agreement with “Abkhazian National Bank”. The information has been posted on Bank of Russia’s official website. It refers to the bank supervision issue. The cooperation stipulates the bank's licensing, control on property structure, monitoring of the current activities and the joint efforts against legalization of profits of criminal origin.
According to the actual data, 15 banks operated in Abkhazia in October 2010. 7 of them were unprofitable. The Supervisory services are liable for information exchange in the bank sector, supervisory standards and requirements and any adjustments made. (Interpressnews)
Donation Box Stolen From Saint Barbara Church
A donation box was stolen from the church of Saint Barbara Church on the night of January 18.
Unknown persons robbed the church of Saint Barbara and stole the donation box, in which there was about 10-15 lari, from the church.
The plunderers entered the church from the window.
It is the third case of robbery at Saint Barbara’s Church within the last year.
The investigation in to the incident is in progress. (Prime-News)
