What do you think on modern Georgian cinematography?
Thursday, May 5
“I think it simply does not exist. What is being filmed now can hardly be called cinematography. Almost all movies are of low quality and are senseless. It is a great pity. The only normal movie shot lately is The Other Side, by Giorgi Ovashvili.”
Maiko, economist, 30
“All movies filmed for the last 10 years have the same story – drug addicts, street guys and criminals. I wonder when this will finish. It is very boring to see a new movie, which is almost the same as the previous one.”
Natia, lawyer, 26
“I think there are good and bad movies. However, we should not turn a blind eye to the fact that Georgian cinematography is progressing step by step. More and more, higher quality movies are coming out. I can’t say that we are close to the European contemporary cinematography, but I think we have very good prospects.”
Tsira, sociologist, 29
“I can not call so called modern Georgian films, movies at all. They are more pornography, than films, targeted only on profit and lacking substance. Most of those “Georgian films” will not be watched after months as there is nothing interesting in them.”
Gocha, Historian, 43
“I think that this field needs assistance very much, Georgian cinematography is just a commercial machine. There are a lot of talented people in the country, talented directors, actors, and actresses; however they do not have financial assistance from the state.”
Tamar, Musician, 32
“To my mind, Georgian cinematography has become more modern. There are people who can display this modernity better and there are some others who can not. So, to say that Georgian cinematography does not exist or that only bad films are being created is wrong, in my opinion.”
Davit, Student, 23
“Nothing interesting just drugs and nudity -there is the same old “rubbish” nothing new.”
Nodar, Economist, 22
“I admire In the Middle of the City (Shua Kalakshi) and The Girl from Suburbs (Gogona Gareubnidan). These films are hilarious and I enjoy watching them only because of this special sort of humor which is so light and simple and quite rare.”
Anna, BA Student, 20
“80% of modern cinematography sucks. They have the same main theme: drug addiction, prostitution and boring things like this.”
Nino, Housewife, 31
“I simply don’t like them.”
Tamta, Interpreter, 42
