Train movement resumed late last night after the rail accident that took place near the town of Mtskheta, some 30 kilometers from Tbilisi on Saturday, seriously slowing highway traffic going East on the main road. Representatives of the Georgian Railway said the train services are delayed although they are working to resume regular services as soon as possible.
About 15 carriages loaded with fuel and food products derailed and fuel spilled from oil tankers causing a danger of fire. Fire engines were called in for emergency preventive measures. The incident was caused by a technical failure of one of the carriages and although high air temperature posed a real threat, security measures were taken on time. Georgian, Kazakh and Azerbaijani wagons were involved, and the exact cause will be determined.
