Basketball: Georgia defeats Ukraine

Yesterday the Georgian national basketball team defeated Ukraine 69:53 in a determining match. The game was held in Klaipeda, Lithuania, within European Basketball Championship. Prior to this game the Georgian team lost to Slovenia 75:87. Ukraine won a victory over Bulgaria 67:56. Both teams have lost two games within the tournament to Russia and Slovenia.



The Roki Tunnel may be closed by the end of the year

The Roki Tunnel in South Ossetia may be closed by the end of the year. Based on the information of Kavkazski Uzel the reason for the closing is for repairs. The Ossetian Head Officials of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Ministry of Internal Affairs gave information on closing the tunnel in the Russian newspaper.

Eduard Kokoiti, leader of Russia's puppet republic of South Ossetia demanded that the Tunnel be closed only from December 1 to allow the movement of citizens into the region for the planned Presidential elections to be held in South Ossetia on November 13.

According to the de facto Minister of Emergency Situations of South Ossetia, Anatoly Bibilov all the demands are being discussed at the moment. After Bibilov the Minister of Transport of Russia Igor Levitin demanded urgent repair works in the tunnel.

Kavkazski Uzel also reported that the Russians already conducted repair works in August for 2.8 billion Russian rubles on it. Repair works are also needed from the Ossetian side and 1.6 billion Russian rubles will be allocated by Russia.

Nestan Kirtadze: life of prisoner Demetradze in danger

In connection with the health condition of Giorgi Demetradze, former Georgia footballer, Nestan Kirtadze, the International Secretary of the Labor Party, said that the Georgian Labor Party is preparing a document describing the health condition of Demetradze, the information which was published in Georgian media. This document will be sent to all international organizations and embassies, not only in Georgia but abroad as well.

"Over the press and media very alarming information is disseminated concerning the health condition of former footballer Giorgi Demetradze. This is outrageous. His health condition is so bad that his life might be in danger... This cannot be ignored by his fans, close relatives, young people and even more by politicians, "- Kirtadze said.

Kirtadze noted this case is very high profile given the fact that many national and international monitoring groups in Georgia are studying the condition of prisoners. Notwithstanding this such alarming information is disseminated over the press.

"For example, last year it was noted that 180 prisoners died in the penitentiary system. For this year they have already reported 40 death cases in Georgian prisons." Kirtadze said.

Kirtadze noted that she has informed envoys and international organization representatives privately about the situation of Giorgi Demetradze. She said this is an act to prevent the worst from happening.

In Kareli region Free Democrats established a regional organization

In Kareli the political party Free Democrats established the regional organization and elected the head of the organization, Shmagi Kopadze. Free Democrats leader Irakli Alasania said this is a third regional organization.

"Shida Kartli is the heart of the Georgia, not only in geographic terms. Here the people are the greatest fighters... I am often visiting Gori and Khashuri and I am sure that with joint efforts we will reach our goal and defeat the National Movement in the elections," Alasania said.

President visits Duruji Lake complex

Mikheil Saakashvili reviewed the ongoing construction works on Duruji Lake on September 2. The construction of a holiday complex at the beach of the lake is already underway. The complex will have an amphitheatre with 500 seats and is due to be finished in November. It will be free for visitors. The decision to build an entertainment complex at the Duruji Lake was voiced by the President only two months ago.

Music festival Svanset 2011

Experimental duet and a special evening in Svaneti - the Music Festival Svanset 2011 in the remote region of Georgia finished on 3 September.

The appearance of local folk ensembles caused most of the emotions and ovations from the spectators- the duet of Green Room and other local folk ensembles gave most original performances.

A new album of late Georgian singer and poet Irakli Charkviani was also presented at the festival - the work of the singer`s widow Ketato Charkviani and a music band turned out successful - over 2000 spectators listened to his music and poems for an hour against the backdrop of Svanetian towers, unique landscapes and the videos of Irakli Charkviani`s photos on a screen installed on the stage.

The festival was organized by the Altervision Group and the Tourism Agency of Georgia. Hundreds of foreign visitors attended the festival on the last evening.
