Gubaz Sanikidze: “Oppositional Six” Should not Form Block

One of the leaders of the National Forum, Gubaz Sanikidize, told Kviris Palita on 12 September that National Forum members are against forming the so-called "Oppositional Six" group of political parties into a unified block for the 2011 parliamentary elections.

Sanikidze says that the group cooperated primarily to change the electoral environment but that the group could plan to extend this cooperation into other areas of the political, civil and non-governmental spectrum.

However, according to Sanikidze, political blocks should not be created 14 months before elections, as time is needed to work out agreement on programs on various issues such as domestic policies and orientation in international affairs.

As a block then, the Oppositional Six have not yet decided on participation in the elections. Sanikidze said that there are subjects on which the group's parties have radically differing opinions and it will take time to discuss all of them.

As for the National Forum, Sanikidze stated that it is not interested in winning mandates in parliament, and that the most important priority is to end the National Movement’s rule in the country. "We’ll be with those who agree on this”, Sanikidze said.
