Intensive works are underway on the Turkish section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway track. The most difficult segment – the digging of a new tunnel – is nearly complete. According to initial plans, the railway should be ready by late 2012 or the beginning of 2013. It is estimated that more than 1 million passengers and 6.5 million tonnes of cargo will be transported using this line.
The BTK railroad is a joint project of Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan and is expected to become an important rail link between Europe and Asia.
