Despite the international sanctions on Iranian oil exports, Armenia has continued, and even increased, its import of Iranian oil products.
There are also plans to build a pipeline between two countries, made at a meeting between the countries' energy ministers in February. The decision to increase economic cooperation with Iran was taken by the Armenian leadership despite pressure from the United States and other Western countries. Armenian officials explain their country is experiencing an embargo from Turkey and Azerbaijan, and it is expensive to buy oil products via Georgia.
