The overwhelming majority of Azeri citizens support current President Ilham Aliev. A recent poll shows that if the elections were held tomorrow, Aliev would receive 91% of the vote. Most of the respondents said that there is no alternative to Aliev, who became President in 2003, at the moment after the death of his father – president Geidar Aliev.
After he was re-elected in 2008, a referendum was held which allows a president to run for election as many times as he or she chooses.
