It looks like Georgia is going to take steps in line with other developed countries of the world. It has started combating the smoking habit, which has many negative effects from the medical point of view. It is estimated that over 11, 000 people die from smoking in Georgia annually. The most efficient method to restrict smoking is an increase tax on tobacco products. The tobacco business is a very profitable branch of the economy. Annually, the budget receives GEL 150 million from selling tobacco products. The organizations that are leading the fight against smoking demand that excise taxes should be increased. Thus, cigarettes will cost 20-30% more. However, skeptics believe that smokers will continue smoking no matter how expensive tobacco becomes.
