During his visit to Armenia, Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania openly declared his support towards restoring the railways in Abkhazia, which will result in connecting Russia with Georgia and further with Armenia via Abkhazia by railway links. Alasania stated that he was supporting this approach in 2005 when he was the special envoy in conflict regulations, although he said it should be done in a delicate way and without haste. According to him, this project will bring benefit both to Georgia and Russia.
In Georgia meanwhile, the UNM and some other politicians are opposed to this approach.
