According to official information, currently Georgia is producing 50, 000 tons of oil and 10 million cubic meters of natural gas. The exploration of oil and gas fields started in Georgia in the 1930s. There were attempts to increase production of these products. However, because of various reasons, lack of finances and the political turmoil of the 1990s, the projects failed. Geologists think there are resources of gas and oil in Georgia mostly in its eastern part. However there is an opportunity to start exploration activities around the Black Sea of Georgian territorial waters.
