Ministry of Agriculture predicts that Georgia has the capacity to increase its production of wheat. Currently, the country produces around 90, 000 tons of wheat, whereas it needs almost 9 times more– approximately 800, 000 tons. Analysts suggest that Georgia has all the capacity to increase its yield of wheat and even satisfy its consumption needs. However, it needs solid assistance from the government. Since regaining its independence, the highest yield Georgia has received from wheat production was in 2001 when it managed to produce around 35% of its wheat– around 300,000 tons. Since then, the production of wheat has been decreasing. Rezonansi newspaper quotes the Minister of Agriculture saying that in the coming months, the ministry will start special programs in this direction.
