During a meeting with International Atomic Energy Agency representatives Azeri President Ilham Alyev stated that nuclear safety and security are very important for the world as well as for Azerbaijan. According to the Aliyev, the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant in Armenia must be closed down. The Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant was built in during the 1970's and there are concerns about its safety standards, as well as the fact that Armenia lies in an area of considerable seismic activity. Armenia has recently signed an agreement with Russia to construct a new nuclear power station in Armenia. The construction is scheduled to take place in 2014-2015.
