The Georgian parliament has adopted new legislation which imposes a moratorium on selling agricultural land to foreigners. As the result of this legislation, private companies and foreign land owners are trying to change the status of agricultural land to non-agricultural land. Although taxes on non-agricultural are more than those on agricultural land, owners are ready to pay more to legalize their ownership of the land. Therefore, some MPs headed by MP Zurab Tkemaladze have proposed putting a moratorium on changing the status of agricultural land as well.
