According to the official statistical information, about 45,000 citizens of Georgia have a dependence on drugs. These are the people who regularly receive injections and are thus officially registered. Specialists and analysts, however, think that the number of people who are addicted to lighter drugs is several times higher than it is registered. Minister of Labour, Health and Social Protection, Davit Sergeenko, has recently stated that combating drug addiction is among the priorities of Georgia. However, at the same time, there is a campaign launched in the country to legalize marijuana. It is hard to say, if adopted, how this regulation will influence the overall situation in the country. The State Budget for 2014 envisages the increase in the number and variety of problems aimed at combating drug dependence, while the increased number of the cases is becoming alarming.
